Thursday September 1, 2016 - #Soberanesfire Smoke Report

Air Quality Report                                                                                               Issue Date: 09/01/2016
Soberanes Fire                                                            Prepared by:  Randy Striplin and Robert Elleman

Forecast-35
Forecast conditions represent impacts from smoke from the Soberanes Fire wildfire.  Contributions from ozone and other pollutants are not reflected.

Fire:  Moderate smoke production yesterday as winds from the north-northwest caused fire activity in the southwestern area of the fire. Today conditions will be similar. Burnout operations on the order of 200-400 acres are likely on the southwest containment line inside of the Coast Ridge Road. Current perimeter is 93,714 acres, with 469 new acres. Current containment is reported at 60%.
Air Quality Today: As the upper level trough slowly progresses eastward, transport winds will lighten and shift to be more northwesterly and less northerly. Smoke drainage down the Big Sur River Valley into Big Sur this morning should be minimal. Low level transport winds will bring smoke into Tassajara again today, perhaps more than yesterday given the lighter winds and less plume lofting. Some smoke will make it up into the southwest transport winds at higher altitudes. That will drift to the east and northeast above the Carmel and Salinas Valleys but is unlikely to significantly affect air quality at the surface.
Air Quality Tomorrow:  Air quality conditions are expected to be similar to today.
