SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — Today, the Santa
Barbara County Public Health Department and the Santa Barbara County Air
Pollution Control District issued an Air Quality Watch for Santa Barbara County
to remain in effect until conditions change.
Smoke from the Canyon Fire on Vandenberg Air Force Base may
affect air quality in northern Santa Barbara County and other areas of the
county. Some smoke has blown offshore but winds can change, and smoke may
affect a range of areas in the county. Parts of the county may also experience
falling ash.
If you see or smell smoke in the air, be cautious and use common
sense to protect your and your family’s health. Everyone — especially people
with heart or lung conditions (including asthma), older adults, and children —
should limit time spent outdoors and avoid outdoor exercise when high
concentrations of smoke and particles are present. If you see falling ash,
avoid activities, such as using leaf blowers, that will stir particles into the
air.
If you have symptoms that may be related to exposure to smoke
and soot, contact your health care provider. Symptoms include coughing,
shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, wheezing, chest tightness or pain,
palpitations, and nausea or unusual fatigue or lightheadedness.
