SICK OF THE SMOKE? Here's where to go: (posted 7/24/2018 335pm)
By now, most things breathing are tired of the thick, choking smoke. The weather pattern of the last several days has kept the thick smoke around the valleys west of the Cascades and south of the Umpqua Divide, with the Rogue and Illinois Valleys being the focal points of the thickest smoke. The Klamath Basin and the Shasta Valley also haven’t been immune to the thick fumes. While there may be times where air quality improves a bit, the upcoming weather pattern (one of similar winds/speeds/directions) won’t really be able to provide an extended improvement.
As we’ve observed over the past week, there are several options within a day’s drive to get away. To escape the noxious air, a quick (not-so-quick?) drive south past Redding, north past Roseburg and to the coast are all good options.
If you can’t make it out of the area for at least a little while, please seek shelter in well-filtered air conditioned buildings and if you are outside, utilize an approved mask imprinted with “NIOSH” or “N95” to filter small particulates. If possible, bring outdoor pets indoors. And, for those that can’t make it inside, limit their activity and provide shelter and plenty of water.
