Soberanes Fire Smoke Impact Forecast #61
Issued: Tuesday September 27, 2016 0800
Posted by: Jen Croft- ARA & Sean Luchs ARA (t)

Forecast conditions represent impacts from smoke from the Soberanes Fire wildfire and other fires.  Contributions from ozone and other pollutants and other sources are generally not reflected.

Fire: Current fire acres are 127,580 an increase in 667 acres. Current containment is 81%. The most active part of the fire was again in unburned portions of the fire interior. Strategy for the fire continues to favor direct attack with no firing operations planned.

Air Quality Today: Winds near the most active part of the fire should become lighter and more northerly, resulting in more significant nighttime and morning pooling of smoke in the Carmel Valley. The northerly winds have brought some minor enhancement of smoke impact, particularly to the northern and coastal communities, and may be enough to degrade good AQ to moderate.

Air Quality Tomorrow:  Winds will again be generally out of the north, but at times will be more northeasterly or northwesterly. This will keep the heaviest smoke impacts around the Carmel Valley. Farther west, any remaining smoke along the coast is likely to be kept there by the daily pattern of offshore and onshore winds until it fully disperses. Some of that smoke may hook around the coastal communities to the north and into the Salinas Valley, causing visual impacts. Smoke from the Loma Fire could potentially enhance smoke impact, depending on its activity.
