Monday, August 10, 2015 Shasta-Trinity & Six River Complexes - Air Quality Report (Short)

Monday, August 10, 2015 Shasta-Trinity & Six River Complexes - Air Quality Report
Prepared by Chuck Sams, Erin Law, and Dan Chan

Forecast conditions represent impacts from smoke.  Contributions from ozone and other pollutants are not reflected.
Smoke Synopsis:
On Sunday, based on 24-hour averages, PM Monitors at Crescent City, Eureka, Hoopa, Orleans, Weitchpec and Willow Creek reported “Good” air quality!  Yet, monitors in the Trinity River drainage, South Fork Trinity River drainage, Shasta County, and Siskiyou County mostly reported “Unhealthy” level of PM2.5 concentration.

Onshore flow today is going bring clean air to Humboldt County.  At the same time, surface southerly wind is going to come up from the Sacramento Valley.  These two winds are forecast to meet at the Shasta/Trinity County line.  Upper level southerly wind is forecast for today.   As a result, smoke from fires in Trinity County is likely to stay in Trinity County near the ground.  When the smoke is lifted due to day time mixing, it will be transported northward.

Tonight, northwesterly wind is expected to bring smoke into Redding/Anderson area.  Also, smoke will settle into the South Fork Trinity River drainage and Trinity River drainage.  Poor air quality is likely to persist at Hayfork, Hyampom, Mad River and Weaverville.

Tomorrow, the battle line for the surface onshore flow and southerly wind from the Sacramento valley will be further west at the Humboldt/Trinity County line. This may bring slightly better air quality to eastern Trinity County.  Upper level Southerly wind is expected to be strong tomorrow and it will bring smoke from the fires further away.  Yreka, Etna, Mt Shasta, and Anderson are likely to have better air quality Tomorrow.
